AI Solution Providers: Types Compared and How to Pick the Right One

"AI solution provider" covers a very wide range of businesses: a CRM vendor that has added an AI assistant, a cloud platform renting out models and GPUs, a global IT services firm running a transformation programme, and a small specialist team building one system around your workflow. All of them will tell you they can solve your problem with AI.

The useful question is not "which provider is best?" but "which type of provider fits this problem?" This guide maps the four main types of AI solution providers, compares them side by side and gives a simple way for Indian businesses to choose.

The four types of AI solution providers

1. SaaS AI products

Software you subscribe to, with AI built in. Examples include Salesforce's Agentforce, an AI agent platform for customer service and sales; Microsoft 365 Copilot inside Office apps; and Zoho's Zia assistant across the Zoho suite. You configure rather than build.

Strengths: fast to start, predictable subscription pricing, vendor handles updates and infrastructure.

Limits: works best when your process matches the product's assumptions; limited control over how the AI behaves; data sits in the vendor's environment; costs scale per user or per conversation.

2. Hyperscaler AI platforms

The large cloud providers offer building blocks: hosted foundation models, model training and deployment tools, vector search, agent frameworks and the compute underneath. Examples include Amazon Bedrock and SageMaker on AWS, Microsoft Foundry (formerly Azure AI Foundry) on Azure, and Google Cloud's Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, which Google announced in April 2026 as the successor to Vertex AI.

These platforms sit on top of a concentrated market. Synergy Research Group estimated that in Q3 2025 Amazon held 29% of worldwide cloud infrastructure services spending, Microsoft 20% and Google 13%, together 63% of a market worth about US$107 billion that quarter (Synergy Research Group, November 2025).

Strengths: enormous capability, security certifications, India data centre regions, pay-as-you-go pricing.

Limits: they are toolkits, not finished solutions. Someone, either your team or a partner, still has to design, build, integrate and run the application.

3. Large system integrators

Global and Indian IT services firms such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro and Accenture run large AI and transformation programmes, often alongside ERP, cloud migration and managed services. Infosys, for example, packages its AI services, solutions and platforms under the Infosys Topaz brand.

Strengths: scale, breadth across technologies, ability to run multi-country, multi-year programmes, established governance.

Limits: engagement minimums and overheads that may not suit mid-sized businesses; smaller accounts can get less senior attention; delivery can be slower for a single focused use case.

4. Specialist and custom AI firms

Smaller companies that design and build AI around a specific business problem, often with depth in particular industries or functions. They typically use hyperscaler models and tools underneath, and integrate with the SaaS products you already run.

Strengths: close fit to your workflow, faster decisions, senior people doing the work, flexibility on scope.

Limits: smaller teams, so check continuity, documentation and support arrangements carefully; quality varies widely between firms.

These types are not mutually exclusive. A typical setup might use a SaaS CRM's built-in AI for email drafting, a hyperscaler model behind a custom claims-reading tool, and a specialist firm to build and integrate that tool.

A worked example

Consider a hypothetical mid-sized retailer with 80 stores that wants better stock replenishment. A SaaS inventory tool with built-in forecasting may be enough if its data model matches how the retailer buys and allocates stock. If replenishment depends on regional festivals, supplier lead times held in spreadsheets and an older ERP, the off-the-shelf forecast will miss what matters. The retailer could hire engineers to build on a hyperscaler platform, engage a large integrator as part of a wider ERP programme, or ask a specialist firm to build a forecasting and ordering assistant around its existing systems. The right choice depends on budget, in-house skills and how central replenishment is to margins. Our AI in retail page covers this kind of problem.

How to pick the right type of provider

Work through these questions in order.

  1. Is the process standard? If thousands of companies run it the same way, such as drafting sales emails or summarising meetings, start with the AI already in your SaaS tools.
  2. Does it cross several systems? If the process touches your ERP, CRM, WhatsApp and a legacy database, a single SaaS product rarely covers it. You need someone who will integrate.
  3. Do you have engineers who can build and run AI? If yes, a hyperscaler platform directly may be enough. If no, you need a partner on top of it.
  4. How big is the programme? Multi-country, multi-year transformation with dozens of workstreams suits a large system integrator. A focused problem with a clear metric usually does not need one.
  5. How specific is your advantage? If the process is how you win, such as pricing, underwriting or dealer management, a custom solution protects that edge better than a product your competitors also use. Our article on custom AI solutions for business growth goes deeper.
  6. What are your data and regulatory constraints? Personal data under the DPDP Act, 2023, and sector rules from RBI or IRDAI may dictate where data is stored and who can process it.

Watch out for relabelled products

As AI demand rises, many existing products are being rebadged. Gartner predicts that over 40% of agentic AI projects will be cancelled by the end of 2027 due to escalating costs, unclear business value or inadequate risk controls, and warns of "agent washing": rebranding existing chatbots, RPA tools and assistants as agentic AI. Gartner estimated that only about 130 of the thousands of vendors claiming agentic AI offer genuine agentic capabilities (Gartner, June 2025).

Whichever type of provider you consider, ask them to demonstrate the product on your data and your process, show what happens when the AI is wrong, and explain exactly which parts are AI and which are rules.

Questions to ask any AI solution provider

  • What business metric will this improve, and how will we measure it against today's baseline?
  • Which of our systems will it connect to, and how?
  • Where will our data be stored and processed, and will it be used to train anything beyond our solution?
  • What are the full costs over three years: licences, usage, build, support and internal effort?
  • If we leave, what do we take with us?
  • Who supports the system after launch, and with what response times?

Where 0101 Labs fits

0101 Labs is a specialist custom AI company based in Mumbai. We build custom AI solutions and automation on top of proven platforms and around the systems you already use, such as CRM, ERP, WhatsApp and core systems. Each engagement is led by an AI Industry Expert who knows your sector, starts with one measurable problem and agrees success measures before anything is built. If an off-the-shelf product already solves your problem, we will tell you.

Conclusion

AI solution providers fall into four broad types: SaaS products, hyperscaler platforms, large system integrators and specialist custom firms. Each is right for a different kind of problem. Match standard processes to products, engineering-led teams to platforms, large multi-year programmes to integrators and specific, high-value workflows to custom specialists. Then hold every provider to the same test: a measurable outcome, on your data, at a cost you understand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a business use more than one type of AI solution provider?+

Yes, most do. It is common to use AI features inside SaaS tools for standard tasks, a cloud platform for models and hosting, and a partner to build custom solutions on top.

Are hyperscaler AI platforms suitable for small and mid-sized businesses?+

They can be, because pricing is pay-as-you-go. The catch is that someone still needs the skills to design, build and run the application on top of the platform.

Do Indian businesses need AI providers with India data centres?+

Not always, but data residency can matter for regulated sectors and sensitive personal data. Check your obligations under the DPDP Act and any RBI or IRDAI rules that apply.

How do I compare costs across different provider types?+

Compare total cost over three years, including licences, usage charges, build fees, support and the internal staff time each option requires.

What is agent washing?+

It is the relabelling of existing chatbots, RPA or assistant tools as agentic AI without genuine agentic capabilities. Ask vendors to show the system planning and acting on your real process.
